Workplace inspections

Every workplace Second Corner places a young person into is inspected before the placement starts and revisited during it. Our checklist mirrors — and extends — Lambeth Council's official Work Permit Inspection Report under the Children and Young Persons Acts 1933 and 1963.

Setting & supervision

  • Manager / owner identified and contactable
  • Nature of work documented and matches the permit
  • Child is never expected to work alone
  • Child is not expected to do anything potentially harmful or dangerous

Safety at work

  • Signing in / out procedure in place
  • Working area clean and free from hazards
  • Any other areas the child can access are also hazard-free (e.g. stockroom, staff room)

Accidents & emergencies

  • Designated first aider on site
  • First aid box available and the child knows where it is
  • Accident book available; child knows the reporting procedure
  • Any past illness or injury logged and reviewed

Fire drill

  • Fire drill arrangements documented
  • Child briefed on the drill, liaison points and use of extinguishers
  • No enclosed areas that could endanger life in a fire
  • Sufficient fire extinguishers in strategic locations

Breaks & welfare

  • Adequate lunch break
  • If food is provided: allergy and dietary records kept
  • Safe, clean area to eat or prepare food
  • Drinking water available

Facilities

  • Toilets and washing facilities clean and satisfactory
  • Toilet / bathroom facilities separate from the general public
  • Separate dressing rooms for under-18s where applicable
  • Rooms adequately ventilated

Contacts & records

  • Employer holds contact details for parent / guardian
  • Employer holds contact details for the school
  • Emergency contact recorded
  • Records of hours, tasks and incidents kept and accessible

Wellbeing check (with the child)

  • Wearing appropriate clothing for the job
  • Appears in good health
  • Not being worked too hard
  • Reports feeling happy and safe in the role
Any concern raised during an inspection is logged, the visiting officer issues written instructions to the workplace, and serious concerns are escalated to our designated safeguarding lead and, where appropriate, Lambeth's Child Employment Team. Lambeth conducts its own random inspections under the same byelaws.
